Vital Therapies Scores Clinical Success in China

Vital Therapies, Inc. (VTI) did not go to China for the usual reasons. “We were invited in by leading hepatologists in China,” said Chairman and CEO Terry Winters. VTI is developing the ELAD® (Extracorporeal Liver Assist Device) System, a medical device built around C3A cells that mimic liver function. Because China faces an epidemic of liver disease (400,000 deaths per year), the China medical establishment was eager to encourage development of a new medical product that can help with a problem that, so far, has proven intractable.
